My First Time Drinking Super Socco

February 23, 1989. It was a Thursday evening in the dormitories that were collectively known as Serrano Village on the campus of Cal State University, San Bernardino. I had been on the phone with Katie, a girl in Oregon who I was in love with. She told me about her complicated life. After my phone call with Katie, this guy, José Osio, who lived in my dorm, talked me into drinking with him and his friends & frat brothers.

We went over to Morongo dorm where they were serving up a mixture of gin and this sports drink called Super Socco. From what I hear, using Super Socco as a mixer with gin was fairly common at the time. Some people enjoyed it. I thought it was a horrendous combination... but I did drink quite a bit of it that night.

After a while at Morongo, we walked over to the pub on campus where a live band was playing. The band was called East Meets West. We listened to the band's set, then meandered back over to Morongo. By the time we got back there, I was feeling funky. The rest of the night remains a blur, but the point is, that was my first time drinking with José. There would be many more times to come.
